While some damage to your vehicle’s windshield can be patched, substantial damage requires a total replacement of your auto glass. This process involves several steps, each of which must be performed efficiently for the best results.
Step #1: Remove the Rubber Trim
The trim is a piece of rubber that runs around the perimeter of the windshield. Not only does it hold the glass in place, it also keeps rain and air outside the vehicle. It must be removed from the damaged auto glass before it can be replaced. A razor blade is often used to cut away the rubber trim.
Step #2: Remove the Old Windshield
Your repair specialist will take certain precautions to remove the old glass in one piece. This is especially difficult when the glass has significant damage. A device with suction cups on handles is often used to perform windshield removal.
Step #3: Prepare the Pinch Weld
A gap, known as the pinch weld, surrounds the frame where the auto glass sits. This area can accumulate dirt and grime over time, so it must be thoroughly cleaned before the new glass is installed.
Step #4: Apply Adhesive
To ensure the pinch weld can effectively hold the new auto glass in place, a urethane adhesive is applied around the perimeter. The application must be quick, or the adhesive will begin to dry before the glass is in place.
Step #5: Install the New Auto Glass
The auto glass is precisely set into the pinch weld, where it adheres to the urethane. The windshield will be secured for a few minutes to ensure it’s stable. From there, it will be allowed to cure for about an hour. At that point, you should be able to pick up your vehicle and drive it home.
