How to Handle Snow and Ice on Your Auto Glass

Winter weather means more treacherous roads thanks to snow and ice. It also means that drivers will be tasked with cleaning off their vehicles, including their auto glass, to ensure safe driving. When it comes to icy windshields, a little effort can go a long way. These tips will help you perform the chore more efficiently, without causing any damage to your auto glass.

Tips on Removing Snow and Ice

  • Apply a warmed alcohol and water solution to the auto glass
  • Engage your vehicle’s air defrost system and set the temp above 80 degrees
  • Use a rubber ice scraper to manually remove ice and snow from your vehicle

Never apply scalding hot water to the auto glass, as the quick change in temperature could crack the glass. In the same token, avoid using sharp metal objects to pick away at the ice.

How to Prevent Ice Accumulation in the First Place

Much like its ability to quickly melt ice when warm, room temperature water/alcohol solutions can be applied to auto glass before bad weather to deter ice accumulation. A mix of water and white vinegar has a similar effect.

A windshield cover is another good option, as it creates a physical barrier to snow and ice. You can use drop cloths, blankets, and other materials to cover the auto glass if you can’t find a windshield cover where you live.
